In the month of November 2019 Staat van Beleg could list 796 human rights violations (and 156 reports/ analyses). (see our archive). This month we write about the children Israel killed over the years in order to defend itself.

The month of November was marked by Israeli airstrikes on Gaza. Including an unborn victim caused by a miscarriage 37 Palestinians were being killed and more than hundred Palestinians got injured. There are eight children among the victims and 51 children got injured. Nearly half of the victims were civilians. No Israeli fatalities were reported. Here we can raise the question if not all residents of Gaza should be designated as civilians since Gaza, lacking an official defence force and sufficient defence equipment, cannot defend itself equally. Gazans are an occupied people and have the right to resist, including by armed force (though not to target civilians), while Israel is an occupying power that has an obligation to withdraw – not a right to defend territories it controls or is colonising by dint of military power.

At the same time the Israeli Air Force struck the home of a senior leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement, Akram al-Ajjouri, in the Syrian capital Damascus. The missiles caused excessive damage to the home, and several surrounding buildings but did not kill Akram al-Ajjouri. The strikes however did kill Akram’s son, Moath al-‘Ajjouri, and wounded his granddaughter. The strike also led to the death of Abdullah Yousef Hasan, and the injury of eight other civilians.

Israeli missiles kill nine family members in Deir Al-Balah

Eight members of the Palestinian family al-Sawarkah were killed in the night of 14th November in an Israeli strike on the Gaza Strip, a few hours before a cease-fire came into effect. On 22 November the Palestinian Mohammad Salama Sawarka (40) died from serious wounds he suffered when Israeli soldiers fired a missile at the family home in Deir Al-Balah which brings the total number of victims on nine.  Among the victims are five children and two women.

The military said it had targeted Rasmi Abu Malhous, commander of the Islamic Jihad’s rocket squadron in the central Gaza Strip but a highly equipped army had mistakenly killed the family of a man with the same name. As Gideon Levy of Haaretz perfectly pointed out the ‘error’: “They, who serve in the most moral army and the most advanced intelligence services in the world, didn’t know that the flimsy tin shack had long since stopped being part of the “Islamic Jihad infrastructure,” and it’s doubtful that it ever was. They didn’t know and they didn’t bother to check — after all, what’s the worst that could happen?”

The next day the Israeli army admitted the killing of eight Gaza family members with a Haaretz headline: “We Thought the House Was Empty”. Later in the day, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu toured a missile intercept control center and an Iron Dome battery in the South, where he thanked IDF soldiers, the Shin Bet (Israeli Security Agency), the cabinet and all who were involved in Operation Black Belt with the following words:

We can reach everyone, even in their bed. I hope that this lesson will be learned.”

During the airstrikes former vice president and current Democratic front runner Joe Biden took to Twitter to declare that he supports the country’s actions:

“Israel has a right to defend itself against terrorist threats. It is intolerable that Israeli civilians live their lives under the constant fear of rocket attacks. That’s why our administration was such a strong supporter of Israel’s life-saving Iron Dome. “

Israel is waging a war on Palestinian children

It is not new that Israel is wiping out an entire family. During earlier operations hundreds of Palestinian families were being slaughtered by Israeli Airstrikes. One of the many families that were killed was the Abu Jame’ family, massacred during Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014. At approximately 7:50 pm on Sunday, 20 July 2014, Israeli warplanes bombarded the house of Tawfiq Ahmad Abu Jame’. The three-storey house was inhabited by five Abu Jame’ families and is located in the Bani Suheila town, in the east of the Khan Younis district, in the south of the Gaza Strip. The house, which was attacked without warning, was completely destroyed. Civil Defence (fire brigade) and ambulances crews rushed to the site of the attack to uncover the bodies buried under the rubble. It took them until the next day, Monday, 21 July 2014, to uncover the victims. The medics found 26 bodies, including 19 children and five women. Only three residents survived, and they sustained various injuries.

 Those who were killed are:

The “operation” which lasted 50 days between July 8 and August 26, claimed the lives of 2,220 Palestinians, including at least 1,492 civilians!, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Defense for Children International Palestine (DCIP) independently verified the deaths of 547 Palestinian children among the killed in Gaza, 535 of them as a direct result of Israeli attacks. Nearly 68 percent of the children killed by Israeli forces were 12 years old or younger.  Only five Israeli civilians, including a child, and 67 Israeli soldiers lost their lives. We have to take in mind that that since September 29, 2000 at least 2,167 Palestinian children have been killed by Israel.

In total Israel killed at least 744 Palestinian children since Operation Protective Edge. This includes children that were killed by Israeli forces during demonstrations and marches in the West Bank and Gaza.

To get a good picture of the number of Palestinian children that Israel could reach so eagerly in their beds in order to ‘defend itself’ since the start of operation Protective Edge we categorized the child victims by age. Data is collected from B’Tselem, The Israeli Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories and Staat van Beleg Archives. Medical victims as a result of travel restrictions are not included.  We will update this list on our website.
