Gaza Zoo Animals Are Suffering: The African tiger at the zoo in southern Gaza Strip was emaciated, its belly shrunken and its striped coat hanging loose. It strode nervously up and down its cage. “I swear to God the tiger has not eaten for four or five days,” said Mohammed Ouida, the owner of South Jungle Zoo. “It needs 100 shekels (about $20) of food a day.” Once bustling with families bringing their children to see lions, monkeys, crocodiles and ostriches, the zoo is mostly empty now, and Ouida can’t generate enough cash to feed his animals. The same story is playing out across Gaza’s six makeshift zoos. Years of conflict, cold winters, longstanding negligence and outbreaks of disease have killed many animals in captivity.

According to the Israeli Nrg news site the government is expected to vote on a bill for a set of construction and reconstruction projects at the Buraq Square. The 35-million-shekel cost for erecting the new prayer space will be paid by the Prime Minister’s Office and the ministries of Diaspora Affairs and Tourism and Finance. No Israeli rabbi will be consulted for approval over such a projected bid, the same source added. The project makes part of new Israeli Judaization projects across the holy occupied city of Jerusalem and Muslims’ the holy al-Aqsa Mosque so as to wipe out the city’s Islamic identity.

Israel still bans the shipment of 400 different kinds of raw materials to the Gaza Strip that are used in industry, a senior Palestinian official said Sunday. Jamal al-Khudari, an independent lawmaker and chairman of the Popular Committee to Defy the Israeli Blockade, said in an emailed press statement that "the Israeli occupation lists these materials in the list of forbidden goods." "The Israeli occupation carefully chooses the list of goods and materials in a way that keeps the cycle of industry blocked and consequently, this keeps thousands of workers, engineers and experts unemployed," said al-Khudari.

Figures released by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics on Thursday suggested that Palestinians will outnumber Israeli Jews in historic Palestine by 2020. The results of the Palestinian census were released as 2015 came to a close in the center’s annual analysis of demographics in the area. The census estimated that by the end of 2015, the total number of Palestinians in “historical Palestine” — meaning the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, and Israel — was around 6.22 million, compared to 6.32 million Jews. The number of Palestinians and Jews in historical Palestine is expected to be equal before the end of 2017, and the number of Palestinians will total 7.13 million compared to 6.96 million Jews by the end of 2020, according to the PCBS census.

Mahdia Hammad was hurrying home to feed her baby. Border Policemen signaled her to stop, but she continued to drive, slowly. Then they sprayed her car with bullets — Here, next to the house’s fence, is where the car rolled to a stop after it had continued to move even though its driver was already dead. And here’s where the Border Policemen stood as they shot dozens of bullets into her car. It all happened on this normally quiet residential street at the edge of the town of Silwad, north of Ramallah. Only the shell casings still scattered along the side of the road and the fragments of the shattered windows of the Hyundai Lantra testify mutely to what happened here last Friday. This is where Israeli troops killed Mahdia Hammad, a 40-year-old mother of four, the youngest a child of 10 months. In Israel it was claimed that she tried to run over the Border Policemen, who were standing in the street. Her husband claims that she was an inexperienced driver who was hurrying home to feed their son and was apparently rattled by the sight of the Israeli force and lost her head. One way or the other, nothing can explain the rage and lust to kill that seized the troops. They sprayed her car and her body with bullets in a frenzy of shooting that continued even after she was dead. Together with Ashraf Idabis and Iyad Haddad – field-workers for the International Red Cross and the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem, respectively – we spent a few hours at the scene this week, taking testimonies from residents and passersby who witnessed the incident.

"Right-wing activists have been infiltrating human rights and anti-occupation organizations. The spies did do serious damage, but to a much bigger target than they intended: Israeli society — Two weeks ago I wrote about a right-wing group trying to recruit people to a “top secret” mission: spying on left-wing organizations in Israel. The outfit was largely a one-man show. I thought it was a colorful but probably not very serious example of the latest “hasbara” antics – propaganda or public diplomacy – gone too far. I was naïve. Two weeks later, we learned that right-wing impostors have been infiltrating, befriending and filming left-wing organizations for several years."

An Israeli government plan to build hundreds of homes for the country’s Druze population faces stiff opposition after it was revealed that the new community would be located on the lands of Palestinian refugees. The town, due to be built west of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel, would be the first new community for members of Israel’s Palestinian minority since the state’s founding 68 years ago. The country’s 1.6 million Palestinian citizens are a fifth of the population.
Leaders of the Palestinian minority expressed outrage that officials had selected a site where two Palestinian villages were located until their destruction following the 1948 war that established Israel. Archival evidence shows that the Israeli military razed more than 500 Palestinian villages after the war to ensure their residents could not return.
“The decision to build a Druze town on these destroyed villages is designed to light a fuse under the relations between the Druze and other members of Palestinian minority,” Samer Swaid, a Druze political activist, told Middle East Eye.
“This is all about Israel reinforcing its divide-and-rule policies over us.”

Nonviolent Resistance in the South Hebron Hills - The worst worries of a child’s school day should be homework. Maybe a lost book, or an argument with a friend. No child’s walk to school should routinely involve armed soldiers and fear of sometimes being chased and assaulted by angry adults. A rarely told story of the 1948 war that founded Israel concerns Nazareth's survival. It is the only Palestinian city in what is today Israel that was not ethnically cleansed during the year-long fighting. Still others, like Tiberias and Safad, have no Palestinians left in them at all.
